Amazon has announced that it will cut 16,000 corporate positions across the company amid increasing adoption of AI globally.
This comes after Amazon laid off 14,000 people last year in October.
In a letter to the employees, Beth Galetti, senior vice president of people experience and technology at Amazon, said that the reduction in its workforce comes as the company seeks to reduce layers, increase ownership and remove bureaucracy.
Galetti added that the company will continue hiring and investing in strategic areas and functions.
She also indicated that there will continue to be job losses but not in the manner its has been done in the past months.
"Some of you might ask if this is the beginning of a new rhythm – where we announce broad reductions every few months. That’s not our plan. But just as we always have, every team will continue to evaluate the ownership, speed, and capacity to invent for customers, and make adjustments as appropriate," said Galetti.
Around 218 tech companies including Google, Microsoft and Meta also laid off employees in 2025, among which 112,732 tech employees lost their jobs, according to Layoffs.fyi, the website tracking all the recent developments.
