Amazon expects to continue hiring in key strategic areas even as it lays off people.

Amazon said it is cutting around 14,000 of the corporate jobs this year, as the tech giant seeks to stay nimble and become lean in the wake of artificial intelligence (AI).

The reduction of the workforce is in line with its efforts to "get even stronger by further reducing bureaucracy, removing layers, and shifting resources to ensure we’re investing in our biggest bets," said Beth Galetti, senior vice president of people experience and technology at Amazon, in a message shared with Amazon employees.

The message noted that "AI is the most transformative technology" its seen since the Internet, and it's helping companies to innovate much faster than ever before.

Most of the affected employees will be given 90 days to look for a role internally, it said. Those who are unable to find a role within the organization or those who choose to leave will be provided with  severance pay, outplacement services, health insurance benefits and more, it added.

The message also said that Amazon expects to continue hiring in key strategic areas even as it lays off people.

In 2022, Amazon had started to cut around 27,000 jobs.

Amazon is not the only tech giant which has decided to let go off employees in bulk amid the rapid adoption of AI.

Earlier in July, Microsoft laid off 9,000, or 4% of its workforce, its biggest since it laid off 10,000 workers in 2023.

Following the lay off, Microsoft's chief commercial officer Judson Althoff said in a presentation that AI has helped the tech giant save more than half a billion dollars last year in its call centre alone.
