Amazon is in talks to invest more than $10 billion in AI startup OpenAI, The Information reported, underlining investor interest in frontier models like ChatGPT despite fears of the AI bubble.
The investment could be done at a valuation of $500 billion.
The proposed investment underscores the enormous capital requirements of cutting-edge AI development as companies compete to build increasingly sophisticated systems. OpenAI has already secured major partnerships this year with Nvidia and Oracle, each worth billions of dollars.
OpenAI recently restructured from its nonprofit origins and finalized new terms with Microsoft, which currently holds a 27% stake and maintains exclusive rights to distribute OpenAI's models through its cloud services. This restructuring has removed previous constraints on OpenAI's fundraising capabilities.
The talks of investment from Amazon also come at a time as OpenAI lays groundwork for a potential initial public offering (IPO) at $1 trillion valuation, according to earlier reports.
Earlier on Tuesday, OpenAI said that it has hired the former UK chancellor George Osborne to develop relationships with governments around the world and broker national-level AI projects.
