Tech giant Apple is developing its own AI wearable, the Information reported, amid growing competition from young AI startups.
The device will essentially be a pin that users can wear on their clothing. It would come with two cameras and three microphones.
Apple's new product development is vital for the company as its younger competitor OpenAI is also preparing to launch its first AI device in the second half of this year.
OpenAI’s Chief Global Affairs Officer, Chris Lehane, confirmed at the 2026 World Economic Forum in Davos that the company expects to debut its first physical AI product in the latter half of this year.
Additional reports suggest that OpenAI's device could be a pair of earbuds.
Apple could potentially released its wearable in 2027 and involve 20 million units at launch.
However, the failure of previous attempts in this category raises significant questions about the actual consumer demand for dedicated AI hardware. Humane AI, a startup founded by former Apple executives, also sold an AI pin. Despite the integrated camera and microphones, it struggled to gain a foothold.
By February 2025, the company had shut down its services and sold its intellectual property and patents to HP for $116 million, leaving the future of the "AI pin" concept in doubt.
