Apple said that it has hired AI researcher Amar Subramanya from Microsoft as vice president of AI.
Subramanya's deep expertise in both AI and ML research will be important to Apple’s ongoing innovation and future Apple Intelligence features, said Apple in a statement.
Most recently, Subramanya served as corporate vice president of AI at Microsoft. Previously, he worked for 16 years at Google, where he was head of engineering for Google’s Gemini Assistant.
Subramanya will report to Craig Federighi, who is Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering. Federighi reports to CEO Tim Cook.
Notably, Subramanya's appointment comes as the tech giant announced that John Giannandrea, Apple’s senior vice president for Machine Learning and AI Strategy, is stepping down.
Giannandrea will serve as an advisor to the company before retiring in the spring of 2026, it added.
"Since joining Apple in 2018, Giannandrea has played a key role in the company’s AI and machine learning strategy, building a world-class team and leading them to develop and deploy critical AI technologies," the statement noted.
The change in management at Apple's AI division comes as the tech giant is seen as a laggard in the AI race.
