After stepping down from Intel last December, former CEO Pat Gelsinger has launched 'Flourishing AI (FAI)' -- a benchmark designed to evaluate how well AI systems align with essential human values.

Developed in partnership with Gloo, a company Gelsinger invested in over a decade ago, the benchmark aims to measure the extent to which AI promotes the conditions necessary for a flourishing life.

The FAI benchmark draws from the Global Flourishing Study, a large-scale international survey led by Harvard and Baylor University, which assesses human well-being across diverse populations.

Gloo adapted six key dimensions from the study to evaluate AI models: character and virtue, close social relationships, happiness and life satisfaction, meaning and purpose, mental and physical health, fnancial and material stability. A seventh category 'Faith and Spirituality' was added by Gloo to reflect its broader vision of holistic human flourishing.

In a recent interview with The New Stack, Gelsinger said he sees Flourishing AI as a necessary step in ensuring that the powerful language models shaping society today are aligned not just with productivity or profit -- but with deeper human values.

The project reflects a growing trend in the AI industry to look beyond performance metrics and consider how these systems affect human lives in the real world.
