This move reflects broader industry trends, as tech companies compete to build advanced cloud systems capable of supporting generative AI technologies.

Meta is ramping up its artificial intelligence capabilities through a newly announced infrastructure program called Meta Compute.

“Meta is planning to build tens of gigawatts this decade, and hundreds of gigawatts or more over time. How we engineer, invest, and partner to build this infrastructure will become a strategic advantage,” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a post on Threads.

The social media giant views robust AI infrastructure as essential for creating superior AI models and user experiences. This strategic direction follows earlier signals from CFO Susan Li about substantial investments in AI-related capacity building.

To put the scale in perspective, a gigawatt represents one billion watts of electrical power. With AI systems requiring massive energy resources, experts predict America's AI-related electricity usage could surge from 5 gigawatts to 50 gigawatts over the next ten years.

Three key leaders will drive this ambitious undertaking. Santosh Janardhan, Meta's global infrastructure chief who has been with the tech giant since 2009, will oversee technical systems, software development, chip programs, and worldwide data center operations. Daniel Gross, who recently joined from Safe Superintelligence (which he co-founded with former OpenAI scientist Ilya Sutskever), will manage long-range capacity planning, vendor relationships, and business strategy. Meanwhile, Dina Powell McCormick, the company's newly appointed president and vice chairman, will handle government relations to facilitate infrastructure development and financing.

This move reflects broader industry trends, as tech companies compete to build advanced cloud systems capable of supporting generative AI technologies. Microsoft continues forging partnerships with infrastructure providers, while Google's parent company Alphabet recently purchased data center operator Intersect in December.
