OpenAI launches first custom AI chip 'Jalapeño' built with Broadcom

The chip is the first in what it describes as a multi-generation compute platform

OpenAI has unveiled its first custom-built AI chip, Jalapeño, developed in partnership with Broadcom, as the ChatGPT-maker looks to build more of its computing infrastructure in-house.

The Sam Altman-led AI startup designed Jalapeño from the ground up to be the 'best inference platform' for large language models (LLMs), it said in a statement.

It added the chip is the first in what it describes as a multi-generation compute platform. Early tests indicate better performance per watt than existing processors used for similar workloads, although the company has not released benchmark data. The chip is expected to be deployed across OpenAI's products later this year.

"The world is moving to a compute-powered economy,' said Greg Brockman, president and co-founder of OpenAI. "Jalapeño is part of our long-term full-stack infrastructure strategy to make compute more abundant, resulting in AI which is faster, more reliable, more affordable for people and businesses, and can be used to solve more important problems," he added.

Hock Tan, president and CEO, Broadcom, noted that its collaboration with OpenAI represents a fundamental commitment to scaling the physical infrastructure required for the next decade of AI.

"This is just the beginning of a multi-generation roadmap. By co-developing our industry-leading silicon directly with OpenAI, we are enabling the deployment of gigawatt scale data centers with Microsoft and other partners beginning in 2026," added Tan.

The announcement marks another step in OpenAI's efforts to diversify the hardware powering its AI models. The company has largely relied on Nvidia's GPUs to train and run models such as ChatGPT, but like several large AI companies, it is increasingly investing in custom silicon to optimise performance and manage infrastructure costs.

The launch places OpenAI alongside Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Meta, all of which have introduced custom AI chips to complement their reliance on third-party hardware.
