OpenAI said that it is introducing study mode in ChatGPT, amid research studies that the use of the AI chatbot is blunting critical thinking skills of students.

Study mode is available to logged in users on Free, Plus, Pro, Team, with availability in ChatGPT Edu coming in the next few weeks, it said in a statement.

It added that study mode was built with college students in mind.

Study mode is designed to be engaging and interactive, and to help students learn something and not just finish something, it noted.

It explained that study mode is powered by custom system instructions written in collaboration with teachers, scientists, and pedagogy experts to reflect a core set of behaviors that support deeper learning.

While ChatGPT is seen as a breakthrough innovation, it has also come under fire for causing brain rot among students as they are heavily reliant on the chatbot to prepare their assignments.

A new study from MIT and other researchers suggests that using ChatGPT to help write essays may impair memory, reduce engagement, and erode a student’s sense of ownership over their work.
