OpenAI said it has launched ChatGPT agent that it says is equipped with the ability to think and act proactively choosing from a toolbox of agentic skills to complete tasks for users using its own computer.
ChatGPT agent will be available to subscribers to OpenAI’s Pro, Plus, and Team plans, it said in a statement. Users need to select “agent mode” in ChatGPT’s dropdown menu of tools to activate the agent.
The launch of ChatGPT agent marks OpenAI's move to transform ChatGPT into a agentic product even as it has earlier brought in an AI agent Operator but hasn't really floored users. The launch and its success as its faces mounting competition from other AI startups like Perplexity and Anthropic as well as tech giants Meta and Google.
The Sam Altman-led startup explained that the ChatGPT agent is incorporated with a suite of tools such as a visual browser that interacts with the web through a graphical-user interface, a text-based browser for simpler reasoning-based web queries, a terminal, and direct API access.
The agent can also leverage ChatGPT connectors, which opens in a new window, allowing users to connect apps like Gmail and Github and helping users to find information relevant to the prompts, it added.
The statement suggested various tasks that one can seek from the ChatGPT agent such as “look at my calendar and brief me on upcoming client meetings based on recent news”; “plan and buy ingredients to make Japanese breakfast for four”; and “analyze three competitors and create a slide deck”.
ChatGPT will intelligently navigate websites, filter results, prompt you to log in securely when needed, run code, conduct analysis, and even deliver editable slideshows and spreadsheets that summarize its findings, it said.
