OpenAI has struck a partnership with PhonePe to make ChatGPT available across the Indian fintech major's platform, underling the AI startup's push to deepen its presence across its second largest market.
The collaboration is expected to help enhance experience for PhonePe users by offering information on everyday needs from planning their travel to shopping, said PhonePe in a statement.
"This strategic alliance demonstrates that collaborations between innovative companies in this space can help expand the reach of cutting-edge technology to the broader population," Rahul Chari, founder, whole-time director and chief technology officer, PhonePe.
Oliver Jay, head of international at OpenAI, noted that the partnership will demonstrate the immense value of consumer AI across India.
PhonePe had over 61 crore registered users as on March 31, 2025.
The collaboration comes at a time when PhonePe has filed draft papers for its initial public offering (IPO) via the confidential route.
OpenAI has been expanding its wings in India this year after earlier announcing plans to open its first office in the country. It also introduced first affordable subscription plan ChatGPT Go in India and recently made it free for users in the country for the next 12 months.
In October, OpenAI also partnered with National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and PhonePe's rival Razorpay to launch agentic payments on ChatGPT and explore AI-driven commerce in India.
