SpaceX has requested the United States Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) approval to launch a constellation of one million satellites in space to serve as data centers for artificial intelligence.
In its filing, SpaceX mentioned that 'by directly harnessing near-constant solar power with little operating or maintenance costs, these satellites will achieve transformative cost and energy efficiency while significantly reducing the environmental impact associated with terrestrial data centers.'
SpaceX has touted this move the 'first step towards becoming a Kardashev II-level civilization - one that can harness the Sun's full power'.
Several media outlets said that it was unlikely that the FCC would approve the launch of such a vast number of satellites. Nevertheless, the filing serves as the starting point for negotiations.
The FCC had earlier this month approved the launch of 7,500 second-generation Starlink satellites. SpaceX is also considering a merger with other Elon Musk owned companies Tesla and xAI. It plans to roll out its IPO later this year.
