Financial services platform Stripe has launched an experimental private preview for large language model (LLM) token billing allowing developers and enterprises to pay for the LLM tokens which they use to access artificial intelligence (AI) models.
The new feature also lets Stripe's users set a price markup in the form of a percentage over and above the actual charges incurred by them for tokens. The markup is the profit that they make from customers by charging them for token usage.
When their customers access their AI application, the company is charged by the AI model vendor such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft or others, for the tokens that the model uses to generate output.
The new feature helps AI application builders tackle fluctuations in prices set by vendors for LLM tokens, and helps them stick to their pricing rule regarding the margin that they charge from customers.
Based on the markup that users provide, the fintech will figure out the prices, meters, and rate configurations to generate billing.
Stripe is a financial services company that provides technological infrastructure for powering transactions online. It processed transactions valuing over $ 1.9 trillion in 2025, more than one percent of global GDP.
In January this year, Stripe partnered with OpenRouter, an AI gateway, to process its user payments through the fintech. An AI gateway is a company that lets developers and enterprises access a diverse range of AI models through its platform.
