American Express announced that customers can use Amex Pay only till July 30, 2025.
"Please note that participating locations may vary over time as payment signage is gradually removed. You will not be able to make any payments from 31 July 2025 onwards," it added, without specifying the reasons for discontinuing Amex Pay.
American Express had also launched Amex Pay in India in 2018. While there is no public data on the number of Amex Pay users in India the number could be quite sizable given the addition of new American Express credit card users in India in FY25.
As per the Reserve Bank of India data, American Express added 107,086 net new credit cards in India during FY25.
However, in India, the global payments company is battling competition from the popularity of the homegrown unified payments services (UPI) for financial transactions as well as the rise of new age fintech companies that are luring customers with their own rewards programmes besides competition from traditional financial services companies.
