For transactions exceeding Rs 5,000, the UPI PIN requirement remains in place as an added safeguard.

NPCI BHIM Services Ltd (NBSL), a fully owned arm of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), has introduced biometric authentication for UPI payments on the BHIM app.

With this feature, users can approve payments of up to Rs 5,000 using their phone’s fingerprint or face recognition, making transactions faster, easier, and more secure, it said in a statement.

It is currently available on both iOS and Android devices that support these features.

The feature is designed to make routine digital payments such as splitting bills, scanning merchant QR codes, or paying online noticeably faster and less error-prone. Forgotten PINs and mistyped entries have long been a quiet frustration for users, often leading to failed transactions at checkout. Biometric authentication sidesteps that problem entirely.

For transactions exceeding Rs 5,000, the UPI PIN requirement remains in place as an added safeguard.

Lalitha Nataraj, MD & CEO of NPCI BHIM Services, said the move reflects BHIM's long-standing focus on making digital payments simple and trustworthy for every Indian, describing biometric approval as a step toward a more seamless payments experience for millions of users.

Earlier this week, Kunal Shah-led fintech major Cred also rolled out biometric login for UPI payments up to Rs 5,000.
