The Haryana government has approved the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigation into the alleged role of five IAS officers in the Rs 590-crore IDFC FIRST Bank fraud case, media reports said, paving the way for the agency to question the officials as part of its widening probe.
The approval was granted under Section 17A of the Prevention of Corruption Act, which mandates prior sanction from the competent authority before investigating allegations against public servants linked to decisions taken in an official capacity.
The CBI sought permission after disclosure statements from the accused allegedly pointed to the involvement of the IAS officers. Investigators are expected to examine administrative approvals related to the placement of government funds in private banks.
The development comes days after the CBI conducted searches across multiple locations in Chandigarh and Panchkula, seizing financial documents and digital evidence linked to the alleged scam.
Investigators allege that officials of IDFC FIRST Bank and AU Small Finance Bank, along with public servants from various Haryana government departments, colluded to siphon off government funds through fraudulent transactions.
The case relates to the alleged misappropriation of around Rs 590 crore in public money. So far, 16 people have been arrested in connection with the investigation.
