OpenAI is partnering with National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and fintech unicorn Razorpay to launch agentic payments on ChatGPT and explore AI-driven commerce in India.
The project is currently at a pilot stage, as per a statement.
OpenAI, which recently announced its plans to launch its first office in India later this year, is expanding its focus on the country that is currently its second largest market after the US.
The project is built on UPI innovations such as UPI Circle and UPI Reserve Pay and is powered by Razorpay’s banking partners -- Axis Bank and Airtel Payments Bank, and built on UPI innovations such as UPI Circle and UPI Reserve Pay.
This is expected to enable seamless UPI transactions for AI-native shopping.
Customers will have full control with real-time tracking and instant revocation, ensuring a secure and user-first shopping experience, it added.
"By enabling user-authorized AI agents to initiate secure payments, we are moving closer to a future where technology anticipates needs and simplifies experiences," said Sohini Rajola, executive director-growth, NPCI.
Harshil Mathur, CEO & co-founder, Razorpay, noted that with agentic payments, it is helping transform AI assistants from simple discovery tools into full-fledged shopping agents.
Oliver Jay, managing director of international strategy, OpenAI, added, "AI is evolving from helping people find products to actually helping them buy them, while also helping sellers reach millions of people."
OpenAI is not the only AI startup looking to tap India's vast base of internet users. Earlier this week, rival Anthropic said that it plans to open its first India office in Bengaluru early next year.
