PayU rolls out payment checkout for visually impaired users

PayU has launched an accessibility-focused payment checkout designed to help blind and visually impaired users complete online transactions independently.

PayU said in a statement that the offering is designed to comply with the accessibility requirements of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) under BIS IS 17802 standards.

The checkout offers full screen-reader support, enabling the visually impaired users to navigate payment options including UPI, net banking, QR codes and NEFT through voice assistance. It also includes adaptive user profiles that allow customers to customise settings such as cursor size, button dimensions and navigation preferences.

Merchants using PayU’s payment gateway can enable the accessibility features without modifying their existing integrations, allowing them to offer an accessible payment experience to customers with disabilities.

Manas Mishra, chief product officer at PayU and Wibmo, said accessibility had been built into the product design from the outset, with the aim of enabling more users to participate independently in digital payments while helping merchants meet regulatory requirements.

The RBI’s October 2024 guidelines require digital payment providers to ensure that their websites, mobile applications and related software comply with accessibility standards for persons with disabilities, making inclusive digital experiences a regulatory requirement across the payments ecosystem.
