RBI elevates Monisha Chakraborty as Executive Director

Chakraborty will oversee the Foreign Exchange Department as well as the Financial Markets Regulation Department.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has promoted Monisha Chakraborty as an Executive Director, with the appointment taking effect from August 3, 2026.

In her new role, Chakraborty will oversee the Foreign Exchange Department as well as the Financial Markets Regulation Department, as per the central bank's statement.

Before assuming the new role, Chakraborty was serving as Chief General Manager-in-Charge in the Department of Supervision. With more than 30 years of experience at the RBI, she has worked across key functions including banking supervision, foreign exchange, and government and bank accounts.

She was also a member of the technical committee that reviewed the presentation format of the RBI’s balance sheet and profit and loss account. In addition, she has previously served as a Banking Ombudsman.

She holds a degree in Economics and a Master’s degree in Business Economics from the University of Delhi.

As per the RBI website, there are 15 Executive Directors along with 1 Chief Financial Officer (CFO) who functions at the Executive Director rank.
