WhatsApp has launched a bill payment feature in India, allowing users to pay a range of household and utility bills directly through the messaging platform.

The service is powered by the Bharat Connect (BBPS) network and provides access to 22,722 billers across 30 categories. These include electricity, water, gas, FASTag, insurance, credit card payments and loan repayments.

Users can access the feature by tapping the ₹ icon at the top of the WhatsApp home screen. From there, they can select a bill category and biller, enter their account details and review the bill amount fetched on the platform before making the payment.

The feature also allows users to keep track of previous and upcoming bills and manage multiple accounts with the same biller. Payments can be completed using UPI, debit cards or credit cards.

WhatsApp said frequently used bill categories will be displayed on the Payments Home screen, while users can select “See All” to browse more than 20 available categories. Bills paid previously through the feature can also appear on the Payments Home screen for quicker access.

Arun Srinivas, Managing Director and Country Head, Meta India, said the addition of bill payments is aimed at bringing another frequently used household activity onto WhatsApp and making digital payments more convenient for users across the country.

The bill payment service is being rolled out in phases across India and is expected to become available to all Android and iOS users over the coming weeks.

The launch comes as digital platforms in India increasingly bundle payments, bill payments and other financial services into their consumer apps.

WhatsApp, which has hundreds of millions of users in India, has also been expanding its business and commerce features, allowing users to interact with businesses and discover products through the platform.
