Zoho Corporation is entering the consumer fintech space with the launch of consumer payments app Zoho Pay.

Zoho Pay will be a standalone app while it will be embedded within its chat platform Arattai, the Moneycontrol reported, citing Sivaramakrishnan Iswaran, CEO of Zoho Payments Tech.

Homegrown Zoho swung into the spotlight recently after calls by government officials to use 'Swadesi' or home made products and technology. This led to the rapid downloads of its chat platform Arattai that is pitched as an alternative to WhatsApp.

Some critics worry that the adoption is driven by initial euphoria and may fizzle later as has happened earlier with homegrown social media platform Koo that was seen as an alternative to X, formerly Twitter.

Iswaran explained that Zoho Pay is part of Zoho’s broader plan to build a comprehensive financial services ecosystem.

While Zoho's entry into the consumer payment space highlight its broader fintech ambition, challenges remain as it already has well established players like Google Pay and PhonePe.
