OpenAI launches GPT-5.6 family with three models

Alongside the models, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Work, a productivity tool for enterprise users.

OpenAI on Thursday launched GPT-5.6, a new family of artificial intelligence models comprising three variants: Sol, Terra, and Luna.

The release follows a weeks-long delay after OpenAI restricted GPT-5.6 to a small group of vetted partners at the request of the US government, amid concerns over the potential misuse of advanced AI models. Anthropic also faced similar government intervention, temporarily pulling access to its Fable and Mythos models before they were cleared for wider release with additional safeguards.

Sol is its flagship model, Terra is a mid-tier offering, and Luna is a lower-cost option, said OpenAI in a blogpost. The models are designed for enterprise applications, software development, and scientific research.

It added the new models are more efficient than their predecessors. CEO Sam Altman recently said Sol is 54% more token-efficient for coding tasks than previous models.

The company also said GPT-5.6 is its most capable cybersecurity model to date. It supports defensive cybersecurity tasks such as threat modelling, code review, patching, and blue-team simulations.

Alongside the models, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Work, a productivity tool for enterprise users. Available on desktop, web, and mobile, the application is designed to help users create documents, spreadsheets, and presentations.

The launch comes as AI companies continue to roll out new models. Earlier this week, competitors including Meta and SpaceXAI also announced new AI offerings.

OpenAI also positioned GPT-5.6 against models from Anthropic. Citing results from the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index, the company said Sol scored 80, better than Anthropic's Fable 5 while using fewer output tokens, completing tasks in less time, and at lower cost.

Terra also performed above Fable 5 on the benchmark, while Luna outperformed Opus 4.8, it noted.

GPT-5.6 is now available through ChatGPT, Codex, and the OpenAI API. Pricing per million tokens is $5 for input and $30 for output for Sol, $2.50 and $15 for Terra, and $1 and $6 for Luna.
