SpaceX to acquire AI coding startup Cursor in $60 billion deal

Elon Musk-led SpaceX has agreed to acquire Anysphere, the startup behind AI coding assistant Cursor, in an all-stock deal valued at $60 billion, marking one of the largest acquisitions in the artificial intelligence sector.
The acquisition comes just days after SpaceX's blockbuster Nasdaq debut, which pushed the company's valuation above $2 trillion and cemented its position among the world's most valuable companies.
Cursor has emerged as one of the most popular AI-powered coding tools, helping software developers automate programming tasks. The startup has attracted backing from investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Nvidia and Alphabet.
The deal is expected to strengthen SpaceX's AI ambitions. Earlier this year in February, the company integrated xAI into its broader operations, and the acquisition of Anysphere is expected to bolster its position in the fast-growing AI coding market, where rivals Anthropic and OpenAI and Anthropic have gained significant traction.
SpaceX had signalled its interest in Anysphere earlier this year when it secured an option to either acquire the company for $60 billion or pursue a strategic partnership.
The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals. SpaceX said it will not use proceeds from its recent IPO to finance the acquisition.
