UPI in June: Overall merchant payments fall, digital gold purchase value climbs

Overall merchant transaction volume fell 2.46% month-on-month, while value declined 7.33%, according to NPCI data.

The overall value of merchant category-wise purchases through UPI declined to Rs 8.61 lakh crore across 14,427.88 million transactions in June 2026, compared to Rs 9.29 lakh crore across 14,791.15 million transactions in May 2026, according to data released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). 

Transaction volume fell 2.46% month-on-month, while value declined 7.33%.

Groceries and supermarkets, the largest merchant category by volume, recorded 3,739.59 million transactions worth Rs 79,705.02 crore in June, compared to 3,872.78 million transactions worth Rs 85,243.71 crore in May. Fast food restaurants registered 1,449.10 million transactions valued at Rs 17,418.12 crore, while eating places and restaurants processed 1,242.19 million transactions worth Rs 21,485.16 crore during the month.

The value of transactions by securities brokers and dealers rose 7.60% month-on-month to Rs 60,945.24 crore in June from Rs 56,640.33 crore in May. Transaction volume in the category also increased 6.26% to 74.22 million. Similarly, debt collection agencies witnessed growth, with transaction value increasing to Rs 69,032.60 crore from Rs 66,317.06 crore, while volumes rose 2.24% to 196.66 million transactions.

Online marketplaces also saw growth both in terms of volume and value, recording 158.01 million transactions worth Rs 9,046.32 crore in June, compared to 150.09 million transactions worth Rs 8,763.11 crore in May. Department stores and variety stores also reported increases in both transaction volume and value during the month.

Among consumer spending categories, digital gold purchases fell 6.48% in volume to 232.94 million transactions, although transaction value increased 4.16% to Rs 2,552.53 crore. Drug stores and pharmacies registered 294.16 million transactions worth Rs 12,428.84 crore, marginally higher in value than the previous month.

Men’s and women’s clothing shops witnessed a drop, with transaction value dropping 10.33% to Rs 11,792.93 crore and volume falling 7.29%. The men’s, women’s and children’s uniforms category also saw value decline 11.75% to Rs 6,955.47 crore. Family clothing shops recorded 80.35 million transactions worth Rs 7,059.78 crore, down from 84.62 million transactions worth Rs 7,674.15 crore in May.

Among utility-linked categories, telecommunication services processed 824.26 million transactions worth Rs 22,964.97 crore, while utilities such as electricity, gas and water recorded 143.97 million transactions valued at Rs 23,911.27 crore, reflecting a 7.73% increase in value despite a marginal decline in transaction volume. Government services registered 144.57 million transactions worth Rs 10,370.66 crore.

Service stations handled 716.87 million transactions worth Rs 47,183.84 crore in June as compared to as compared to 708.67 million transactions worth 48,547.39. Meanwhile, electronics shops processed 88.14 million transactions valued at Rs 12,052.04 crore, while drug stores and pharmacies recorded nearly 294.16 million transactions worth Rs 12,428.84 crore.

Overall UPI transactions also fell to 22.71 billion worth Rs 28.92 lakh crore in June 2026, compared to 23.2 billion transactions worth Rs 29.9 lakh crore in May 2026, reflecting a moderation in digital payment activity during the month.
