OpenAI hires Uber's Prabhjeet Singh as India managing director

Singh, who spent more than 11 years at Uber, will join OpenAI in September.

OpenAI has appointed former Uber India and South Asia president Prabhjeet Singh as its managing director for India, making him the company's senior-most executive in one of its fastest-growing markets.

Singh, who spent nearly 11 years at Uber, will join OpenAI in September. He will oversee consumer growth, enterprise adoption, strategic partnerships, regulatory engagement and overall operations in India, reporting to Asia-Pacific managing director Kiran Mani.

The appointment comes as OpenAI expands its presence in India, which the company has described as its second-largest market after the US. Over the past year, the ChatGPT maker has deepened partnerships with Indian businesses and government agencies while investing in local infrastructure to support growing demand for artificial intelligence services.

During his tenure at Uber, he led the ride-hailing company's expansion across India and South Asia, navigating regulatory challenges while growing its mobility and delivery businesses.

The move also underscores intensifying competition among global AI companies to strengthen their leadership teams in India as the country emerges as a key market for AI adoption across enterprises, developers and consumers.

Tech giants including Microsoft, Google, Amazon and Meta have all expanded their AI investments in India over the past year, while OpenAI's closest rival Anthropic has also begun building a stronger local presence.
